Titel Expansion of growth curves using a periodic function and BASIC programs by Marquardt's method Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1986 Publikation Bull. Japan Sea Reg. Fish. Res. Lab. Nissuiken Hokoku Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band Ausgabe 36 Seiten 77-107
Schlüsselwörter Wachstum, modell, methode, listing, basic, fischerei, statistik, algorithmus
Zusammenfassung (down) The growth curves of von Bertalanffy, logistic and Gompertz models were expanded using a periodic function, f (t + 1) = f (t). Each model was expanded into l = l infinity (1-exph sub(1)), l = l infinity /(1 + exph sub(1)) and l = l infinity exp(-exph sub(1)) where h sub(1) = -K(F(t)-F(t sub(0))), F' = f, f = (1 + a)/2 + (1-a)/2 multiplied by cos 2 pi (t-t sub(1)) : a less than or equal to f less than or equal to 1. BASIC programs for each model were written by Marquardt's method. The following subjects were also considered : an expansion into another type, a parameter-error analysis, a comparison with the original model and with Walford's graphical method, and a calculation to determine the extreme points of the growth rate. This expansion of the growth curves is useful and the programs are easily applied to other curves.

Titel Feeding habits and diet in two populations of spined loach, Cobitis taenia (L.) Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1977 Publikation Freshwater Biol Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band 7 Ausgabe 5 Seiten 469-477
Schlüsselwörter Nahrung, fische, verhalten, populatio, saison
Zusammenfassung (down) The feeding habits of C.taenia were studied by means of monthly samples taken over a 2-year period, October 1972-October 1974, from two sites, one on the River Great Ouse at Newport Pagnell and the other at some neighbouring gravel pits. Dietary components, seasonal variation in these components, and seasonal and diurnal variation in feeding intensity were examined. The ecological niche of the food items and their size range are discussed, since both these factors appeared important in governing the microhabitat of the fish. The feeding activity followed a seasonal cycle with little or no feeding in the winter and a high level of feeding activity in mid-summer. The diet showed a predominance of small food items, such as chydorids, copepods and rhizopods. These items varied in occurrence during the feeding period which appeared to be related to their own abundance, pointing to non-selective feeding by the fish. The small size and benthic habits of the food items, many of which are closely associated with surface layers of mud and weed, indicated a preference by C.taenia (L.) for feeding in this type of habitat and on this type of food, in contrast to the stone loach, Noemacheilus barbatulus (L.), which is believed to inhabit stony areas and take larger food items.

Zusammenfassung (down) The Fabens method is commonly used to estimate growth parameters k and l in the von Bertalanffy model from tag-recapture data. However, the Fabens method of estimation has an inherent bias when individual growht is variable. This paper present an asymptotocally unbiasses method using the maximum-likelihood approach that takes account of individual varibility in both maimum lenth and age-at-tagging. ...

Titel Fitting and comparing several growth curves of the generalized von Bertalanffy type Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1986 Publikation Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band 43 Ausgabe 8 Seiten 1656-1659
Schlüsselwörter mathematical-models; growth-curves; fishery-biology; evaluation-
Zusammenfassung (down) The earlier version of the von Bertalanffy growth formula (VBGF) has three parameters and is a special case of the “generalized” VBGF which has four parameters. The special VBGF can easily lead to erroneous results whereas the large flexibility built into the generalized VBGF enables it to provide a biologically realistic fit to the data. The author presents a statistical method and a computer program in Fortran to fit the generalized VBGF to a sample (a sample comprises several age groups, with one or more observations in an age group) and to examine statistically the fit to a sample and to compare statistically these curves (and their individual parameters) fitted to several samples. An example is provided, which also compares the fit of the generalized VBGF with the special VBGF.

Titel Calculation of Bayes posterior probability distributions for key population parameters Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1994 Publikation Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band 51 Ausgabe 3 Seiten 713-722
Schlüsselwörter Fisch, Fischerei, Statistik, Population, Mathematik, CPUE, VPA, Modell
Zusammenfassung (down) The Bayes posterior probability distribution is a powerful way to represent uncertainty in fisheries stock assessments, and can be calculated for key population and policy parameters of practically any population dynamics model. But the calculation is unwieldy when probabilities are to be assigned to a large grid of parameter combinations. The computational burden can be reduced substantially by analytically integrating over at least two “nuisance parameters” that occur in most assessment models: the observation error variance and the catchability coefficient. This simplification allows the analyst and manager to focus more easily on population parameters (stock size, slope of recruitment curve) that are of direct policy interest.

Titel The BASIC program to analyse the polymodal frequency distribution into normal distributions with Marqualdt's method Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1984 Publikation Bull. Japan Sea Reg. Fish. Res. Lab. Nissuiken Hokoku Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band Ausgabe 34 Seiten 53-60
Schlüsselwörter computer-programs, size-distribution, frequency-analysis, mathematical-models
Zusammenfassung (down) The BASIC program for analysis of the polymodal frequency distribution into normal distributions is described. The algorithm of this program is Marqualdt's method. Gauss' elimination method is used to solve the simultaneous linear equations. Each parameter is scaled during calculation for faster convergence. User inputs the data and initial values of the parameters. It is adequate for convergence to set lambda = 10000 or larger.

Titel Comparative Performance of MULTIFAN and Shepherd_s Length Composition Analysis (SRLCA) on Simulated Length-Frequency Distributions Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1992 Publikation Transactions of the American Fisheries Society Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band 121 Ausgabe 5 Seiten 667-677
Schlüsselwörter Statistik, modell, lÄngenfrequenz, wachstum
Zusammenfassung (down) The authors simulated length-frequency distributions for 3-, 7-, and 13-age-class exploited populations (Peprilus triacanthus, Gadus morhua, Paralichthys dentatus, Pomatomus saltatrix ) to compare the performance of Shepherd's length composition analysis (SRLCA) and MULTIFAN in resolving the distributions to age frequencies. The length distributions were characterized by von Bertalanffy growth, variable recruitment, variable mortality, partial selectivity of fishing gear for the youngest age-groups, and a length-dependent trend in the standard deviation in length at age. Comparative performance of SRLCA and MULTIFAN was assessed quantitatively by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov cumulative distribution test to compare calculated proportions at age with the simulated values. Shepherd's analysis provided a good return for the amount of computational resources invested, with limited subjective user input. In contrast, MULTIFAN offered a much more complex but powerful estimation technique, and performed consistently better than SRLCA in matching the simulated proportions at age.

Titel Fish distribution and catchability: What is the appropriate measure of distribution? Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1994 Publikation Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band 51 Ausgabe 5 Seiten 1046-1054
Schlüsselwörter Fisch, Statistik, Population, Fischerei, Geographisch, Mathematik, Modell
Zusammenfassung (down) The authors show that spatially uniform changes in abundance can affect catchability given certain models for the distribution of fishing effort, but that this effect is slight compared with the effect of changes in the spatial spread of fish distribution. An index of distribution is described that depends only on spatial spread: the minimum area over which a specified percentage of the population is spread. We tested the density dependence of this index using data on Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Results depended on the percentage of the population for which the index was evaluated. The area containing most (90 or 95%) of the population was density dependent, expanding as population size increased. The area of highest cod concentration (i.e., the area containing 50% of the population) did not expand significantly as population size increased.

Titel Estimating number of species and relative abundances in stream-fish communities: Effects of sampling effort and discontinuous spatial distributions Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1995 Publikation Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci. J. Can. Sci. Halieut. Aquat Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band 52 Ausgabe 5 Seiten 936-949
Schlüsselwörter Fisch, Fließgewässer, Habitat, Verbreitung
Zusammenfassung (down) The authors sampled fishes and measured microhabitat in series of contiguous habitat units (riffles, runs, pools) in three Virginia streams. Monte Carlo simulations were used to construct hypothetical series of habitat units, then examined how number of species, similarity in relative abundances, and number of microhabitats accumulated with increasing number of habitat units (i.e., sampling effort). The curves indicated that 90% of the species present were usually found by sampling 5 to 14 habitat units (stream length of 22-67 stream widths). Estimates of species relative abundances required less sampling effort for a given accuracy than estimates of number of species. Rates of species accumulation (with effort) varied among streams and reflected discontinuity in species distributions among habitat units. Most discontinuity seemed to be due to low population density rather than to habitat selectivity. Results from an Illinois stream corroborated our findings from Virginia, and suggested that greater sampling effort is needed to characterize fish community structure in more homogeneous stream reaches.

Titel Statistical properties of an index of biological integrity used to evaluate water resources Typ Zeitschrift, Artikel
Jahr 1994 Publikation Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci Kurztitel der Zeitschrift
Band 51 Ausgabe 5 Seiten 1077-1087
Schlüsselwörter Umweltverschmutzung, Fisch, Elektrofischerei, Methode, Mathematik, Modell, Statistik, ANOVA
Zusammenfassung (down) The authors determined the statistical properties of the index of biotic integrity (IBI) from electrofishing samples collected from Ohio streams. Although IBI is widely used to evaluate the condition of water resources by biologists and resource managers, expanding its role as a regulatory tool depends on statistical validation of its precision and power. We addressed these issues by constructing an additive variance model for IBI and testing the assumptions of that model directly with a bootstrap resampling algorithm and simulations using field data. Statistical properties of IBI supported the use of standard analysis techniques such as ANOVA for hypothesis testing. We determined with power analysis that IBI can distinguish between five and six nonoverlapping categories of biotic integrity based on a model that includes the effects of measurement error, variability of fish assemblages through time, and statistical interaction of location and time.
